Welcome to the Outimage coverage of the 57th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 2001. Helping out as an assistant to the Media Director for the the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and working as a photographer for this event, some of my shots taken in Sydney appear on the pages that follow.

The picture used in the above icon comes from the start of the 40th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 1984, when a motorcycle was (and most likely still is) the best way to get to Watsons Bay Gap for shots of the fleet sailing out through the heads.

There were 155 starters in 1984 and photos reveal that Jack Rooklyn's Apollo was first out the heads with a spinnaker run down the coast. Line honours that year went to New Zealand and overall on handicap to Indian Pacific. 1984 was a bad year for many off the participants with 104 retirements made after a southly buster hit the fleet scattered along the NSW South Coast and in Bass Strait.

The smallest boat at 8.9 metres in the 2001 Hobart fleet, Red Rock Communications. Formally Atria, this boat has taken out two divisional wins in past Sydney to Hobarts'. The 2001 Boxing day start coincided with some hugh bushfires encircling the Sydney basin; hence the brown sky.

Link to the Official Site of the 57th Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, that is if it still exists! I think its a great icon with the sea bird flying past so I'm leaving it here.
