The
NSW entry, Sting, displaying the New South Wales Centenary
of Federation Spinnaker. Exclusive use of this spinnaker for the
2001 Sydney to Hobart was achieved by a private email auction, run
by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. Supplied by the NSW Centenary
of Federation committee, proceeds from spinnaker's auction were
passed onto the Safety of Life at Sea Trust.

The
Swedish Volvo 60 representing the Nakka Strand Yacht Club, SEB.
While crossing Bass Strait with around 70 nautical miles from
the north east tip of Tasmania, SEB's rudder case separated
from the hull leaving a hole which was fortunately plugged by
the crew. With an emergency rudder, SEB retired from both
the Sydney to Hobart leg and the Volvo leg from Hobart to Auckland,
returning to Eden for repairs.

Another
Swedish Volvo 60 entry, Assa Abloy, representing the Gothernburg
Royal Yacht Club. In a fickle finish with the leading boats stalled
in Storm Bay, Assa Abloy was in the right spot to be first
to pick up the breeze. Taking out line honours in one of the closest
finishes of the Race's history, Assa Abloy went on to win
the leg to Auckland with 2 crew confined below in their bunks
due to illness.
