Approaching from the left-hand side of the course and closest to the left-hand mark is Richard Perini's Evolution (3rd through the gate), Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori's Nerone centre and Jim Richardson's Barking Mad to the rear of the line. Brett Neill's Venom is the boat approaching the bottom gate from the right.

Leading the fleet down to the right-hand gate mark from the right-hand side of the course is Steve Howe's Warpath (1st through the gate), Hidden and behind is David Gotze's Brighton Star, Alexis Michas and his Phish Food is just to the left, Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory is further back with Michael Blumentals Intersell behind. John Calvert-Jones and Southern Star to the right of Warpath and Philippe Kahn's Pegasus is further right.

Evolution and Warpath head to the right-hand gate mark. Warpath got over 1st while at the left-hand gate, Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino got through the gate in 2nd place, Evolution in 3rd.

Behind Mascalzone Latino at the left-hand gate mark are Chris Meehan's Belle Property and Eivind Astrup's Norwegian Steam.

Back at the right-hand gate mark, the leading boat working to windward is Evolution with Neville Crichton's Team Shockwave behind. Approaching the mark are Nerone, Barking Mad, Brighton Star, and Intersell.
