While at dock in Sydney, final preparations were been made in order to recommence Gipsy Moth's voyage schedule. This schedule was abruptly interrupted at
Rangiroa Atoll
when Gipsy Moth IV ran aground
while on passage to Tahiti. The incident happened around 19.30 hrs local time, 29th April.

After successfully salvaging Gipsy Moth IV and getting the boat safely to New Zealand, it was an incredible effort from a dedicated local team of talented boat construction people (with further support from a host of New Zealand and global organisations) to repair what amounted to an enormous hole on the starboard side of the hull.

With a narrow margin of opportunity to get back on schedule from Sydney (and considering the Tasman Sea was experiencing a typical Winter cycle of rough conditions) Gipsy Moth IV was shipped across the Tasman. When these photos were taken, the crew were utilising free time between formal functions to finalise fitting out essential electronic and other equipment, needed for their next voyage up the east coast of Australia to Mooloolaba in Queensland.
