Giltinan 2000-winning team mates John Winning and Anthony Young have produced another winner in the 18 foot Skiffs. This time, it was off the water with their efforts, at very short notice, in introducing a live tracking system for the recent Giltinan Championship on Sydney Harbour.
Both are long time 18 foot Skiff competitors and were competing in separate teams at the 2011 Giltinan Championship. Winning skippered Yandoo, while Young crewed with Western Australia’s Grant Rollerson on SLAM. |

Anthony (commonly known as Jack) has been associated with the 18’s for more than 20 years and has won every major title available in the class. As well as winning the 2000 Giltinan, Australian and NSW titles, he has skippered many skiffs over the years and went within a couple of points in taking out the 1996 Giltinan with Nokia. He is also noted for his sail making and boat tuning capabilities in the 18’s. |

John (Woody) Winning is famous in the class for the numerous championship wins as well as being runner-up to the legendry Iain Murray, in two Giltinan and three Australian Championships. His support of the class in so many ways has led to the tag ‘modern day Mark Foy’, the founder of the 18 Footers’ back in the 1890’s.
Aside from the many outstanding achievements of the pair, they can now be recognised for their efforts in the introduction of the live tracking at the world’s major 18 Footer event, the Giltinan Championship. There is no doubt this is one of the biggest breakthroughs in the 18’s in Australia for many years. |

Stewart Wood, Marketing and Events Co-ordinator of Yachting Australia, organised the system in just a few days and assisted Jack with the ‘hands-on’ work throughout the regatta. Without Jack’s initiative and John Winning’s personal financial support, this wonderful breakthrough would not have happened during the 2011 Giltinan.
We all owe a great debt of thanks to Jack, John and Stewart for their efforts for a job really well done; all for the sport of 18ft Skiff Racing. |
