Royal Geelong Yacht Clubs Robert Hanna justified the expense of making the long haul to Queensland with a popular Performance Handicap win in the Brisbane to Gladstone race.

Delivery skipper and sailing master Jamie ‘Nudge’ Bennett encountered a mixed range of wind conditions on the 1500n/ml trip for Shogun to take part in the annual Easter Blue Water classic.

"We temporarily hove too off the Gold Coast Seaway to rescue two tired and frantic board surfers who were glad to see us stand by," said Bennett.

"They took a rest onboard before the water police transferred them ashore," he added.

Shogun the former Living Doll then continued her passage onto Brisbane via Cape Moreton to principally fly her RGYC burgee and ‘battle flag’ in Queensland’s premier ocean racing classic.

Her happy crew overcame the disadvantage of racing in unfamiliar waters to complete the 308 nautical mile race in fifth place on line honours while her course time of 27 hours 37 minutes 55 seconds was fast enough to win the major Performance Handicap trophy.

The result was a fitting reward for the Shogun crew who happily accepted the trophy for their win over the Queensland yachts Cadibarra (David Netherton) and Peter Harburg’s Black Jack.

"It’s a long way to come to win a bottle of Mount Gay Rum, however the crew have enjoyed the race and the fellowship and I’m sure Shogun will be back in 2010," said Bennett.
